After winding up a string of September dates with Big Head Todd, Carbon Leaf returned home to their studio in Richmond VA, where the band has just completed their new album, CHRISTMAS CHILD. At the same time, the band announced that they will finish off the year with an East Coast December tour called HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS. The tour’s venues have been selected to allow the band to get ‘up close and personal’ with the audiences.

As Singer and lyricist Barry Privett notes, “A lot of these shows we’ve booked are aimed at more intimate, seated, acoustic-based performances, which lend themselves perfectly to the Holidays. It’ll be a cozier atmosphere that offers up a break for the band and audiences during what can often be a crazy season.”

Matt Zeiner Band

Friday, December 17th • 8:00 PM

Who couldn’t use a little break from holiday shopping and preparations? CT’s own Matt Zeiner Band and Infinity Hall want to give you that break – a break from the craze and a break for your wallet! Take $5 off any ticket to the show with the code below.*

It took little convincing for Matt Zeiner to leave college and pile into a van to tour with Matt “Guitar” Murphy of Blues Brothers fame. Matt Murphy was Zeiner’s first serious education in the blues, but the band played everything from hard jazz-fusion to straight blues. Zeiner went on to tour with Dickey Betts (Allman Brothers Band) and has shared the stage with the likes of Johnny Winter, Roomful of Blues, Jamie McLean, and Jeff Pevar. Zeiner and his quartet will be tearing into a catalog of original soul/R&B tunes, some funky vintage blues and a fresh take on some well-known rock standards.

Make The Scene

Infinity Music Hall Guest Post by:
Bridgette L. Rallo
The Greenwoods Studio

Do you like music? Do you really, really like it?

If you said yes, then you can’t miss The Seldom Scene. These five bluegrass virtuosos pick mandolins and dobros the way angels pick harp strings. I kid you not, The Seldom Scene’s music is stringsmanship of the highest caliber. The singing’s not bad, either.

Bluegrass is the most intense of the country music subgenres, mostly because of the incredible amount of ability required to stand up before an audience of very savvy listeners. Bluegrass fans are not your usual breed of consumer; a heck of a lot of them are peers who feed off dazzling picking runs and sweet tenor harmonies. This is elemental stuff and The Seldom Scene has been giving it up for 36 years.

Purists will love the clear, strong harmony of tenor Lou Reid, whose humility belies a great big talent hailed by all in the country music industry. Reid shines, accompanied on the journey by lead guitarist and vocalist Dudley Connell, bass guitarist and vocalist Ronnie Simpkins (notice a trend?), dobro player and vocalist Fred Travers, and original band member, banjo player and venerable vocalist Ben Eldridge.

If a night of down deep Appalachian tradition and digital magic is something you’d enjoy, come on over and make The (Seldom) Scene at Infinity Hall at 8 pm on Friday night, December 3.

Carolina Chocolate Drops

Thursday, February 3rd • 8:00 PM

In the summer and fall of 2005, three young black musicians, Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens, and Justin Robinson, made the commitment to travel to Mebane, N.C., every Thursday night to sit in the home of old-time fiddler Joe Thompson for a musical jam session. Joe was in his 80’s, a black fiddler with a short bowing style that he inherited from generations of family musicians. He had learned to play a wide ranging set of tunes sitting on the back porch with other players after a day of field work. Now he was passing those same lessons on to a new generation. With tongue in cheek, the Drops music ranges boldly from Joe Thompson’s “Cindy Gal” to Tom Waits’ “Trampled Rose” and Rhiannon’s acoustic hip hop version of R&B artist Blu Cantrell’s “Hit ‘Em Up Style.”

“Tradition is a guide, not a jailer. We play in an older tradition but we are modern musicians.”—Justin Robinson

Devon Allman’s Honeytribe

Saturday, February 26th • 8:00 PM

“Science fiction blues” isn’t a genre you’ll find in an illustrated history of rock and roll. At least not yet. But Devon Allman and his group Honeytribe make a case for its inclusion with their ground-breaking new album Space Age Blues. “I had a concept that you could simplify as ‘Darth Vader meets B.B. King,’ ” the guitar-slinging scion of one of rock’s royal families (Allman Brothers Band front man Gregg Allman is his father) shares. Allman, bassist George Potsos and drummer Gabriel Strange have created a portrait of our tech-mad era, an age moving in hyper drive that occasionally challenges our very humanity. It’s a musical thrill ride, full of surprises like guitar licks that explode into whistling comet trails, lush beds of strings and an overall sonic palette that draws on the best of electric music’s past and present, blending the stomp of classic rock with the sweet caress of soul and the intoxicating swirl of modern psychedelia

Rodney Crowell:
Chinaberry Sidewalks Tour

Thursday, March 17th • 8:00 PM

On Jan 18th, 2011 Knopf will publish the new Rodney Crowell memoir, Chinaberry Sidewalks. In celebration of the release, Rodney will be doing a series of intimate, one-man shows – playing guitar, singing, and re-living the stories in the book. Rodney Crowell migrated from Texas to Nashville in the early 1970’s to learn to be a songwriter. The strength of his writing, singing and guitar playing earned him a spot with Emmylou Harris’s Hot Band and launched his career. In 1977, he formed his own group, The Cherry Bombs, and in 1978 released his first album, Ain’t Living Long Like This. In 1988 he released Diamonds and Dirt, which generated an unprecedented five number-one singles, including “It’s Such a Small World,” with Rosanne Cash. Rodney won a Grammy in 1989 for the Best Country Song: “After all This Time.” He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003 and the 2008 album Sex & Gasoline was also Grammy-nominated.

Tower of Power

Thursday, April 14th • 8:00 PM

No matter whom you may be, where you live, or your taste in music, Tower of Power will find you. And once that happens, it’s all over. You will come to believe not only that soul music is the salvation of us all, but that Tower of Power is one of those rare bands who can claim to be the real deal, 100 proof, aged-to-perfection, ground zero Soul. Of course they’re still on the radio, their up-front brass section serving as the prototype for today’s retro swing bands, and lending their singular horns to immortal tracks by Elton John, Rod Stewart, the Eurythmics and Phish. But the truest testament to Tower of Power remains the band’s formidable concert appearances. Stand in front of the stage at their show and bathe in the sonic blast of brass and funk.

One Night, Two Performances!

One of the most popular funk groups of the ’70s, WAR is also one of the most eclectic; they freely meld soul, Latin, jazz, blues, reggae, and rock influences into an effortlessly funky whole. Although WAR’s lyrics are sometimes political in nature (in keeping with their racially integrated lineup), their music almost always has a sunny, laid-back vibe emblematic of their Southern California roots. WAR kept the groove loose and open to extended jamming — in fact, many of their studio songs were edited together out of longer improvisations. These jams demonstrate WAR’S truly group-minded approach: no one soloist or vocalist placed above the equally-talented others, and their grooving interplay places WAR in the top echelon of funk ensembles.
