Poor Old Shine Returns to Infinity Hall Nov. 25

It’s telling that Poor Old Shine’s first full-length release is a live album recorded at Infinity Hall. It’s more telling that the band returns Nov. 25, less than six months after the show they recorded July 8 for the live album. Seems the band has an affinity for Infinity, and the feeling is mutual. (I know: Groan.)

Anyway, Poor Old Shine is a young band full of old souls playing a timeless brand of roots music. The band started the way so many do, growing out of late-night jam sessions as part of a folk song circle at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, which snowballed into the band’s first gig in December 2010. The group’s music is a hearty blend of acoustic instruments on cover songs and originals ranging from somber ballads to up-tempo foot-stompers, and they sound as if they’ve been doing it for years.

Poor Old Shine somehow missed inclusion in this year’s Grand Band Slam (a vast oversight, local music buffs), but the group is already finding fans in far-flung places: along with local gigs, the group has played at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and, in September, performed at the National Heirloom Exposition food fair in Santa Rosa, California. Catch them in a small room while you can.
